China’s Summer Box Office Hits Record 5 Billion Yuan

China's 2025 summer box office has surged past 5 billion yuan ($697 million) as of Sunday morning, signaling a robust recovery for the entertainment sector amid growing consumer confidence. Data from Maoyan, a leading box office tracker, shows daily revenues have stayed above 100 million yuan for 10 consecutive days, with Saturday’s single-day sales reaching 293 million yuan – the highest this season.

Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth leads with 541 million yuan in earnings, closely followed by the homegrown comedy The Lychee Road at 468 million yuan. The strong performance of international and domestic films alike highlights shifting audience preferences and the sector’s economic resilience.

Other notable entries include Japan’s Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback, Peter Chan’s crime thriller She's Got No Name, and Brad Pitt’s racing drama F1 The Movie. Analysts attribute the boom to strategic film scheduling, premium theater experiences, and post-pandemic pent-up demand.

Running from June 1 to August 31, the summer movie season remains a critical barometer for China’s cultural consumption trends. The record-breaking figures underscore the growing influence of Asia’s entertainment markets on global cinema.
