Mexico Urges US Collaboration to Tackle Cross-Border Trafficking Amid Tariff Threats

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called on the United States to intensify efforts to combat drug and arms trafficking, responding to U.S. threats of imposing a 30% tariff on Mexican imports by August 1. The move comes as bilateral tensions rise over border security and trade policies.

In a letter to Sheinbaum, U.S. President Donald Trump accused Mexico of insufficient action against drug trafficking and illegal immigration. Sheinbaum countered during her daily press conference, stating, "We do our part and they also have to do their part," while emphasizing ongoing collaboration between the two nations.

A Mexican delegation arrived in the U.S. last Friday to negotiate terms on trade, energy, immigration, and crime. Sheinbaum expressed optimism about reaching a mutually beneficial agreement but stressed that any deal must respect Mexico’s sovereignty, calling it a "non-negotiable principle."

Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard will lead the talks, with Sheinbaum underscoring the need for balanced responsibility. "There is coordination," she said, highlighting the interconnected challenges of cross-border crime and economic stability.
