China’s Foreign Trade Grows 2.9% in H1 2025 Amid Global Challenges

China’s foreign trade demonstrated resilience in the first half of 2025, with total goods imports and exports rising 2.9% year-on-year to 21.79 trillion yuan ($3.04 trillion), according to data released by the General Administration of Customs on Monday. The growth comes despite persistent global economic uncertainties and shifting trade dynamics.

Exports surged 7.2% to 13 trillion yuan during the six-month period, driven by strong demand for advanced manufacturing products and green technologies. Imports, however, declined 2.7% to 8.79 trillion yuan, reflecting subdued domestic demand for raw materials and energy commodities. Officials noted a marked rebound in June, with all key indicators showing improved momentum compared to earlier months.

"China’s foreign trade has not only expanded in volume but also enhanced its structural quality," a customs spokesperson stated, emphasizing stability in cross-border supply chains and increased trade with emerging markets. Analysts suggest the export growth underscores China’s evolving role as a supplier of high-value goods, even as global inflation and geopolitical tensions reshape trade patterns.

The figures highlight the Chinese mainland’s capacity to adapt to external pressures while maintaining its position as a critical link in global commerce. With major economies navigating sluggish growth, China’s trade performance offers insights into Asia’s broader economic trajectory and opportunities for regional partners.
