China has called on the United States to adhere to multilateral trade principles following reports of U.S. negotiations with unspecified economies over reciprocal tariffs. The remarks come amid U.S. efforts to finalize trade agreements before a 90-day tariff suspension period ends on July 9. Countries failing to reach deals could face unilateral U.S. tariffs, a strategy China claims undermines the World Trade Organization's framework.
"Only by firmly upholding principled positions can countries truly safeguard their legitimate rights and interests," the spokesperson said, emphasizing China's support for resolving disputes through equal dialogue. The statement warned against tariff exemptions that compromise Chinese interests, vowing "resolute countermeasures" if such scenarios occur.
