Trump Expands Steel Tariffs to Home Appliances, Rate Hits 50%

The Trump administration has expanded its steel tariffs to include household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers, with a 50% rate taking effect June 23. The move marks the second expansion of tariffs since March and adds eight new product categories to the list of steel derivative goods subject to levies.

What’s New in the Tariff Expansion?

According to a U.S. Commerce Department notice, the tariffs will apply to the steel content within imported appliances, including combined refrigerator-freezers, cooking stoves, and food waste disposals. This follows a previous expansion in March that added nearly 300 product categories, from industrial tools to agricultural equipment.

Broader Trade Strategy

The latest hike aligns with recent U.S. actions doubling steel and aluminum tariffs to 50% and targeting auto parts and other goods. Officials cite "national security" concerns tied to trade practices, though critics warn of rising consumer prices and global trade tensions. Analysts suggest businesses reliant on imported steel components may face significant cost pressures.

The measures come amid ongoing trade negotiations with multiple partners, though their long-term economic impact remains uncertain.
