U.S. Steel Tariffs Spark Global Backlash, Trade Tensions Rise

U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50% starting June 4 has drawn sharp criticism from key allies, raising concerns about a renewed global trade war. The move, framed as prioritizing domestic industries, directly impacts Canada and the European Union (EU), which collectively supply nearly half of U.S. steel imports.

Canada, the largest exporter of steel and aluminum to the U.S., warned that the tariffs will disrupt supply chains and threaten thousands of jobs. "This is a severe blow to our industries and workers," a Canadian trade official stated, noting that 50% of the country’s production relies on U.S. demand. Meanwhile, the EU called the decision "counterproductive," arguing it undermines ongoing negotiations and risks retaliatory measures.

Analysts suggest the policy could strain diplomatic relations and complicate efforts to stabilize post-pandemic supply chains. With the World Trade Organization (WTO) sidelined in this dispute, observers warn of a fragmented global trade landscape where unilateral actions take precedence over multilateral frameworks.
