Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Danish counterpart Lars Lokke Rasmussen pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation during high-level talks in Beijing on Monday, marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The discussions highlighted green development, trade expansion, and multilateral collaboration as key priorities.
Wang emphasized China's commitment to 'equal partnerships between nations regardless of size,' recalling Denmark's early recognition of the People's Republic of China in 1950. Both ministers agreed to boost collaboration in renewable energy, sustainable technologies, and scientific innovation – sectors where Denmark has global leadership.
'Our comprehensive strategic partnership has delivered concrete benefits through green development initiatives,' Wang stated, noting Denmark's potential role in China's carbon neutrality goals. Rasmussen confirmed Denmark's opposition to economic decoupling: 'Trade wars serve no one's interests. Danish companies are committed to long-term investments in China.'
The dialogue comes as Denmark prepares to assume the EU Council presidency in late 2024. Wang expressed China's willingness to work with the EU on maintaining multilateral systems, particularly through UN and WTO frameworks. Both nations agreed to coordinate on addressing global challenges including climate change and sustainable development.
Cultural exchanges and educational partnerships were identified as crucial for strengthening people-to-people ties. Rasmussen highlighted opportunities in sustainable urban development and circular economy practices – areas where Danish firms already collaborate with Chinese counterparts.
With Denmark currently serving on the UN Security Council, the ministers reaffirmed their commitment to international law and conflict resolution through dialogue, particularly regarding the Ukraine crisis.
