China Maintains Tariff Countermeasures Amid US Fentanyl Dispute

The Chinese foreign ministry has reaffirmed that its countermeasures against U.S. tariffs imposed over the fentanyl issue remain effective, signaling continued tensions in bilateral trade relations. The U.S. recently introduced a 20% tariff on select Chinese goods, citing concerns linked to fentanyl precursor chemicals, following earlier rounds of similar measures.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized China's stance at a Wednesday press briefing, stating that the country will continue to "firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests." The remarks came after talks in Geneva between U.S. and Chinese officials failed to resolve disagreements on the issue, which has become a focal point in broader economic negotiations.

Analysts suggest the dispute reflects deeper challenges in balancing public health concerns with trade competitiveness. While Beijing acknowledges collaborative efforts to curb illicit fentanyl trafficking, it rejects what it views as unilateral economic pressure tactics. Business leaders warn that prolonged trade friction could disrupt supply chains across industries as both nations navigate election-year political pressures.
