Global Poll: Trade with China Outpaces U.S. in Public Approval

Amid escalating trade tensions, a global survey by CGTN and Renmin University reveals a striking preference for China's international trade policies over those of the United States. Over 31,000 respondents across 41 countries and regions—including major economies like the UK, France, and Australia—weighed in on the shifting dynamics of global economic trust.

The poll found that 51.8% of participants believe their countries benefit more from trade with China, compared to just 19.4% favoring the U.S. European respondents showed particular skepticism toward American economic strategies, with 48.1% characterizing the U.S. administration as untrustworthy. Younger demographics aged 18–44 expressed stronger criticism of U.S. policies, with over 64% condemning perceived infringements on global rights.

Three-quarters of respondents identified economic coercion as a defining feature of 'America First' policies, while 65.9% accused the U.S. of pursuing global dominance through trade decoupling efforts. In contrast, 35.8% preferred China as a cooperative partner compared to 27.4% for the U.S., with significant margins in key markets like Germany (34% vs. 21.5%) and Australia (45.8% vs. 22.3%).

The Chinese government has emphasized dialogue to address what it calls 'extremist economic bullying,' aligning with global demands for stable trade frameworks. Academics note the findings reflect shifting perceptions of economic leadership as developing economies increasingly influence international discourse.
