China Urges U.S. to Cease Tariff Threats for Trade Dialogue

China has called on the United States to abandon pressure tactics and engage in constructive negotiations to resolve ongoing tariff disputes, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated during a press briefing on Tuesday.

The remarks came in response to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's assertion that China should 'de-escalate' trade tensions due to its substantial export surplus. Guo emphasized that the U.S. initiated the tariff conflict and stressed that future discussions must prioritize equality, mutual respect, and shared benefits to achieve sustainable solutions.

'Threats and unilateral demands undermine the foundation of trust required for meaningful dialogue,' Guo noted, underscoring Beijing's commitment to resolving trade imbalances through balanced diplomacy. The exchange highlights persistent friction in U.S.-China economic relations, which continue to impact global supply chains and market stability.
