Shanghai's Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding base marked a milestone on April 15 with the delivery of the CMA CGM SEINE, the world’s first 24,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ship. Commissioned by French shipping leader CMA CGM, the vessel is set to begin operations on the Far East-Europe route on April 18, showcasing China’s maritime innovation.
Stretching 399 meters—nearly the length of four football fields—the ship boasts a cargo capacity of 23,876 containers and 2,200 refrigerated units. Its LNG-powered ‘green heart,’ an 18,600-cubic-meter fuel tank, enables 20,000 nautical miles of low-emission travel, slashing CO2 by 20% and sulfur oxides by 99% compared to conventional ships.
The CMA CGM SEINE builds on its 2020 predecessor with five major upgrades: expanded cargo space, reduced fuel consumption, SOLAS-compliant safety systems, enhanced firefighting capabilities, and noise-dampened crew quarters. Hudong Zhonghua has delivered 17 vessels for CMA CGM, 12 of which use dual-fuel technology, solidifying China Shipbuilding Group’s global leadership in sustainable maritime engineering.
