China-ASEAN Agri-Ties Flourish with $34.7B Trade in 2024

China’s agricultural collaboration with ASEAN countries continues to thrive, with the region retaining its position as the second-largest source of agricultural imports for the Chinese mainland in 2024. Official data reveals bilateral trade in agricultural products reached $34.73 billion this year, reflecting a resilient partnership amid shifting global markets.

Analysts attribute this growth to strengthened infrastructure links under Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative and the implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). “The numbers demonstrate practical economic synergy,” said Dr. Li Wei, an ASEAN-China trade specialist. “From Thai tropical fruits to Vietnamese coffee, ASEAN exports now regularly appear in Chinese supermarkets and e-commerce platforms.”

This cooperation extends beyond commodities, with China recently establishing joint research centers in Indonesia and Cambodia focused on sustainable farming technologies. Meanwhile, Chinese hybrid rice varieties have helped boost yields across multiple ASEAN member states.

The development holds promise for business communities. As ASEAN’s middle class expands, demand grows for premium Chinese teas, processed foods, and agricultural machinery—creating opportunities for exporters on both sides.

Observers note that robust agricultural ties contribute to regional food security while fostering cultural exchange through shared culinary traditions. With negotiations ongoing for upgraded free trade agreements, stakeholders anticipate further integration of these crucial Asian markets.
