EU Condemns US Tariffs, Warns Global Economic Fallout Looms

European leaders issued sharp rebukes against the United States on Thursday following the announcement of new tariffs on EU imports, raising concerns over escalating trade tensions and their potential to destabilize the global economy. The measures, introduced by U.S. President Donald Trump, include a 20% levy on EU goods—part of a broader strategy that has drawn criticism for risking a costly trade war.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen denounced the tariffs as a “major blow to the world economy,” emphasizing Brussels’ readiness to respond with countermeasures while urging renewed negotiations. “There seems to be no order in the disorder,” she remarked during a visit to Uzbekistan, advocating for “cool-headed” dialogue to resolve disputes.

Germany and France echoed calls for restraint but signaled preparedness to retaliate if talks fail. French President Emmanuel Macron plans to convene sectors impacted by the tariffs, with government officials vowing to “attack online services” as part of a broader response. Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed the need for pragmatism, stating Britain would “fight for the best deal” despite no longer being an EU member.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warned that a trade war would “weaken the West in favor of other global actors,” underscoring the geopolitical stakes. Industry groups across Europe also voiced alarm, with the German Automotive Industry Association asserting tariffs would “only create losers,” while chemical sector representatives urged de-escalation to avoid a “spiral of damage.”

The EU has faced multiple U.S. tariff hikes since January, including a 25% duty on auto imports effective Thursday. Brussels has already pledged retaliatory measures, signaling a deepening rift in transatlantic trade relations.
