New Report Highlights Poverty Reduction, Livelihood Improvements
A white paper released by China's State Council Information Office on Friday detailed significant advancements in protecting economic and social rights in the Xizang Autonomous Region. Titled 'Human Rights in Xizang in the New Era,' the document outlines progress in education, healthcare, employment, and poverty eradication since 2012.
Poverty Alleviation Success
Xizang eliminated extreme poverty by 2019, lifting 628,000 registered impoverished residents out of hardship through measures such as industrial development, ecological conservation initiatives, and social welfare programs. The region relocated populations from uninhabitable areas and prioritized vocational training to create sustainable livelihoods.
Sustaining Growth Post-2020
Following its poverty eradication milestone, Xizang implemented rural revitalization strategies to consolidate gains. Per capita net income for those previously in poverty rose by 12.5% in 2024, reflecting ongoing efforts to expand access to education and healthcare while fostering new industries in tourism and clean energy.
The report underscores improved living standards through enhanced infrastructure, including road connectivity and digital access, which have strengthened rural communities. Social security coverage now reaches 99% of residents, aligning with national development goals.
