South Korea Eases Visa Rules for Chinese Tourists to Boost Tourism

South Korea will offer visa-free entry to Chinese group travelers starting in the third quarter of 2024, aiming to revitalize its tourism sector ahead of key regional economic engagements. The announcement follows China's November 2023 decision to extend visa-free privileges to South Korean nationals through 2024, fostering reciprocal travel opportunities between the two neighbors.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok emphasized the policy's role in accelerating the return of Chinese visitors, particularly families and older travelers. Analysts predict the streamlined process will unlock demand from smaller Chinese cities, with bookings via platforms like Ctrip already rising 20% year-on-year.

The move coincides with South Korea's preparations to host APEC members during the APEC Leaders' Meeting in heritage-rich Gyeongju later this year. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning welcomed the development, stating: "Strengthening cultural exchanges serves both nations' interests."

Industry projections suggest the return of group tours could significantly benefit South Korea's retail and hospitality sectors. Chinese travelers constituted 28% of international arrivals in 2023, underscoring their economic importance.
