China Condemns US Tariffs Tied to Fentanyl, Vows Countermeasures

China has criticized U.S. tariffs imposed under the pretext of addressing fentanyl concerns as "unfounded," urging Washington to reconsider what it called a violation of global trade norms. The remarks were made by Commerce Minister Wang Wentao during the annual National People's Congress session in Beijing, as tensions escalate over new economic barriers.

The U.S. announced 10% tariffs on all Chinese imports this week, citing insufficient action on fentanyl precursors. China swiftly released a white paper detailing its drug control measures, including strict regulations on 35 fentanyl-related chemicals since 2019 and collaboration with international agencies like the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

In response, China imposed retaliatory tariffs ranging from 10% to 15% on U.S. agricultural goods, including soybeans, pork, and corn. Wang described the U.S. move as a "classic case of harming others without benefiting itself," noting immediate losses in U.S. stock indices following the announcement.

Analysts warn the dispute could disrupt global supply chains, particularly in agriculture and pharmaceuticals. Wang emphasized China's openness to "mutually beneficial cooperation" but warned against unilateralism: "Protectionism offers no path forward. The world expects dialogue, not dictates."
