China Leads Global Initiative with New International Standard for Elderly-Care Robots

The International Electrotechnical Commission has released a global standard for elderly-care robots, spearheaded by China, aimed at guiding the healthy development of the elderly-care robotics industry.

According to a statement from the State Administration for Market Regulation released on Thursday, the standard provides comprehensive technical benchmarks for the design, manufacturing, testing, and certification of elderly-care robots.

To address the diverse needs of elderly users in daily living and health care, the standard outlines essential requirements in areas such as accessibility, reliability, energy efficiency, and noise control. Additionally, it sets forth technical specifications for health monitoring services, communication support, activity assistance, and information and data management.

The administration noted that the issuance of this standard is expected to guide manufacturers in accurately focusing on the characteristics and needs of the elderly in product design. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of robot products and foster new growth drivers within the elderly-care robotics industry.

Amidst the challenges posed by an aging population, China has implemented policies to encourage the development of smart elderly care. Latest data indicates that by the end of 2024, the population aged 60 and above in the country will reach 310 million, accounting for 22 percent of the total population. This figure is projected to rise to 30 percent by 2035, with the elderly population exceeding 400 million.
