China Records 9.02 Billion Trips During Spring Festival Chunyun

China has witnessed a historic surge in inter-regional travel during the 40-day Chunyun, also known as the Spring Festival travel rush. Official data released on Sunday revealed that the total number of passenger trips reached an unprecedented 9.02 billion, marking a 7.1-percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The special work team established to ensure smooth operations during Chunyun concluded its efforts on Saturday, highlighting the successful management of this massive human migration. Often regarded as the world's largest annual movement of people, Chunyun underscores China's vast mobility and robust economic activity.

With the economy steadily recovering and a growing demand for travel, this year's travel rush saw the transportation network efficiently handling record passenger volumes. Road traffic accounted for the majority of trips, totaling approximately 8.39 billion and increasing by 7.2 percent year-on-year.

The railway sector also experienced significant growth, with passenger volumes reaching 513 million, a 6.1 percent increase year-over-year and a new record for the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. Meanwhile, China's civil aviation sector reported 90.2 million passenger trips and operated 739,000 flights during the same period, both achieving historical highs, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

The Spring Festival, celebrated as a time for family reunions, fell on January 29 this year, providing millions of Chinese families the opportunity to come together and celebrate.
