Australian Academic Criticizes US Tariffs as Ineffective for Reindustrialization

Warwick Powell, an adjunct professor at Queensland University of Technology, has voiced his skepticism regarding the United States' efforts to revive its manufacturing sector through the imposition of tariffs. In an interview with CGTN's Guan Xin, Powell stated that attempting to rejuvenate a manufacturing industry that has been hollowed out over more than five decades solely by imposing tariffs is a vain endeavor.

Powell emphasized that the decline of the US manufacturing base is the result of multiple factors accumulated over fifty years, and that tariffs alone are insufficient to address the complex challenges faced by the industry today.

Comments like Powell's highlight the ongoing debate over the effectiveness of protectionist measures in restoring a nation's industrial capabilities.
