China Lodges WTO Complaint Over US 10% Tariff Increase

China has formally filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) following the United States' announcement of an additional 10 percent tariff on selected Chinese products, according to a spokesperson from China's Ministry of Commerce on Tuesday.

The spokesperson emphasized that this action is intended to protect China's legitimate rights and interests. In response to media inquiries, the spokesperson criticized the US's move, stating that the imposition of these tariffs significantly violates WTO rules and exemplifies unilateralism and trade protectionism.

The Ministry of Commerce further stated that the US decision undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system, weakens the foundation of economic and trade cooperation between China and the US, and disrupts the stability of global industrial and supply chains.

Highlighting the broader implications, the spokesperson noted that the United States has consistently favored unilateral actions over multilateral cooperation, drawing strong condemnation from the majority of WTO members. \"China firmly opposes the U.S. actions and urges the U.S. side to immediately rectify its wrongdoings,\" the spokesperson added.

As a committed supporter and significant contributor to the multilateral trading system, China expressed its readiness to collaborate with other WTO members to tackle the challenges posed by unilateralism and trade protectionism. The spokesperson concluded by reaffirming China's dedication to safeguarding the orderly and stable development of international trade.
