China has officially filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) following the United States' announcement of an additional 10 percent tariff on Chinese products, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Commerce stated on Tuesday.
The spokesperson emphasized that this move is intended to safeguard China's legitimate rights and interests in response to the U.S. actions. \"The U.S. imposition of additional tariffs on Chinese products has seriously violated WTO rules,\" they said, labeling the act as a \"typical example of unilateralism and trade protectionism.\"
According to the spokesperson, the U.S. tariffs severely undermine the rules-based multilateral trading system, erode the foundation of China-U.S. economic and trade cooperation, and disrupt the stability of global industrial and supply chains. The United States has repeatedly prioritized unilateralism over multilateralism, which has drawn strong condemnation from the majority of WTO members.
\"China firmly opposes the U.S. actions and urges the U.S. side to immediately rectify its wrongdoings,\" the spokesperson declared.
As a staunch supporter and significant contributor to the multilateral trading system, China stands ready to collaborate with other WTO members to address the challenges posed by unilateralism and trade protectionism. The spokesperson added, \"We aim to safeguard the orderly and stable development of international trade.\"
