As the ice and snow tourism season reaches its peak, Harbin, the capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, is experiencing an unprecedented surge in visitors. During the previous winter season, Harbin welcomed over 87 million tourists, marking an astounding 300 percent year-on-year increase. Tourism revenue soared by an impressive 500 percent, reaching 124.8 billion yuan (approximately $17.3 billion). This remarkable growth reflects the city's successful efforts to enhance its winter tourism offerings and attract visitors from across the globe.
This year, the demand for winter leisure travel remains robust. According to Chinese travel platform Qunar, Spring Festival hotel bookings in Harbin have surged by 76 percent compared to last year. The upcoming 2025 Harbin Asian Winter Games and the introduction of new winter-themed travel options have further heightened the city's appeal.
Innovative Travel Experiences Drive Demand
To meet the growing interest, Harbin has introduced new winter-themed train routes that enhance accessibility and offer unique experiences. The K974 ice and snow-themed train, launched by China Railway Nanchang Group, now connects Xiamen and Harbin, making winter tourism more convenient for travelers from southern China. Additionally, the K5197 ice and snow travel photography train features specially designed cabins offering studio photoshoot services—a concept that has gained popularity, particularly among elderly travelers.
\"I am 72 years old this year. I came here to experience this tourist train and the travel photography service, and it has been a wonderful surprise,\" said Jin Yue, a traveler from Liaoning Province, in an interview with China Media Group.
The combination of Harbin's rich cultural heritage, innovative tourism experiences, and world-class events is attracting a diverse range of visitors, from adventure seekers to cultural enthusiasts. As the city continues to expand its offerings, it stands as a shining example of China's dynamic and influential role in global tourism.
