Mexico City — Mexico will retaliate against the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump with its own tariffs and other measures, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday.
In a statement, Sheinbaum rejected Washington's accusation that her government has an alliance with drug trafficking groups, calling it \"slander.\"
This development comes after President Trump signed an order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and the Chinese mainland.
In a lengthy post on X, Sheinbaum emphasized that her government does not seek confrontation with its northern neighbor but rather collaboration and dialogue.
\"We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,\" Sheinbaum wrote.
The Mexican president, who has repeatedly sought to calm tensions with President Trump, highlighted her government's achievements since she took office in October, including seizing 20 million doses of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl and detaining over 10,0000 individuals linked to drug trafficking.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada would impose 25 percent tariffs on C$155 billion ($106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods in response to U.S. tariffs. C$30 billion worth of goods would take effect on Tuesday, while C$125 billion would be implemented in 21 days, Trudeau told a news conference.
The escalation of tariffs among these key trading partners raises concerns about potential impacts on global trade, including markets in Asia. As the situation develops, businesses and investors worldwide are closely monitoring for further developments.
