Mexico to Retaliate Against U.S. Tariffs, Says President Sheinbaum

Mexico will retaliate against the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump with its own measures, including tariffs, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday.

In a firm response to the U.S. administration's recent trade actions, Sheinbaum rejected accusations from Washington that her government has alliances with drug trafficking groups, labeling them as \"slander.\"

\"We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,\" Sheinbaum stated in a lengthy post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

She emphasized that Mexico does not seek confrontation with its northern neighbor but rather aims for collaboration and dialogue to resolve trade disputes.

The announcement comes after President Trump signed an order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China, escalating tensions between the nations.

Highlighting her government's efforts since taking office in October, Sheinbaum cited the seizure of 20 million doses of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl and the detention of over 10,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking.

\"Our commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring the safety of our citizens is unwavering,\" she said.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also responded to the U.S. tariffs, announcing on Saturday that Canada would impose 25 percent tariffs on C$155 billion ($106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods. Of this, C$30 billion worth of goods would be affected starting Tuesday, with the remaining C$125 billion to be implemented in 21 days, Trudeau stated at a news conference.

The escalating trade tensions among the U.S., Mexico, and Canada have raised concerns over the stability of economic relations in North America, with potential impacts on global markets.
