Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday that Mexico will retaliate against the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump with its own tariffs and other measures.
Sheinbaum also rejected Washington's accusations that her government has alliances with drug trafficking groups, labeling the claims as \"slander.\" This statement follows President Trump’s order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China.
In a detailed post on X, Sheinbaum emphasized that her administration does not seek confrontation with its northern neighbor but advocates for collaboration and dialogue. \"We categorically reject the White House's slander that Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,\" she wrote.
Since taking office in October, Sheinbaum has highlighted her administration's achievements, including the seizure of 20 million doses of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl and the detention of over 10,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking.
In response to the U.S. tariffs, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will impose a 25 percent tariff on C$155 billion ($106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods. The tariffs on C$30 billion worth of goods will take effect on Tuesday, with the remaining C$125 billion implemented in 21 days.
