Mexico will retaliate against the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump with its own tariffs and other measures, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday.
Sheinbaum also rejected Washington's accusation that her government has an alliance with drug trafficking groups, labeling it as \"slander.\"
This statement follows U.S. President Trump's order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China.
In a detailed post on X, Sheinbaum emphasized that her government does not seek confrontation with its northern neighbor but instead aims for collaboration and dialogue.
\"We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,\" Sheinbaum wrote.
The Mexican president, who has consistently worked to ease tensions with President Trump, highlighted her administration's achievements since taking office in October, including seizing 20 million doses of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl and detaining over 10,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also announced on Saturday that Canada would impose 25 percent tariffs on C$155 billion ($106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods in response to U.S. tariffs. Of these, C$30 billion worth of goods would take effect on Tuesday, while C$125 billion would be implemented in 21 days, Trudeau stated during a news conference.
