Mexico City, Mexico — Mexico will retaliate against the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump with its own tariffs and other measures, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday.
Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico does not seek confrontation with its northern neighbor but prefers collaboration and dialogue. In a lengthy post on X, she wrote, \"We categorically reject any attempts to undermine our government's integrity and sovereignty, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory.\"
The announcement comes after President Trump signed an order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. The Mexican president, who has repeatedly sought to calm tensions with the U.S., highlighted her government's efforts since taking office in October, including seizing 20 million doses of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl and detaining over 100,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also declared that Canada would impose 25 percent tariffs on C$155 billion (US$106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods in response to the U.S. tariffs. \"C$30 billion worth of goods would take effect on Tuesday, while C$125 billion would be implemented in 21 days,\" Trudeau announced during a news conference.
Both Mexico and Canada are key trading partners of the United States, and the escalating trade tensions have raised concerns over potential impacts on the North American economy. Businesses and investors are closely monitoring developments as the situation unfolds.
