Mexico City—Mexico will retaliate against the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump with its own tariffs and other measures, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday.
In a firm response to Washington, President Sheinbaum rejected accusations from the U.S. that her government has alliances with drug trafficking groups, calling them \"slander.\"
\"This slander undermines the integrity of our nation,\" Sheinbaum stated in a lengthy post on X. \"We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory.\"
The tensions escalated after U.S. President Trump signed an order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. In response, Mexico is set to implement its own tariffs and measures against the United States.
Despite the rising tensions, President Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico does not seek confrontation with its northern neighbor. \"Our government seeks collaboration and dialogue,\" she wrote, highlighting the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations.
Sheinbaum also touted her government's achievements since taking office in October, including the seizure of 20 million doses of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl and the detention of over 100,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking. \"These efforts demonstrate our commitment to combating organized crime and ensuring the safety of our citizens,\" she noted.
Canada Joins Retaliation Efforts
In solidarity with Mexico, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada would impose 25 percent tariffs on C$155 billion ($106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods in response to U.S. tariffs. \"C$30 billion worth of goods will be affected starting Tuesday, with an additional C$125 billion implemented in 21 days,\" Trudeau said during a news conference.
The joint actions by Mexico and Canada signal a significant shift in trade relations within North America, stirring concerns over potential impacts on global markets and economic stability.
Global Implications
The imposition of tariffs among these neighboring nations could have far-reaching consequences for international trade and economic cooperation. Analysts are closely monitoring the situation, particularly the effects on supply chains and industries reliant on cross-border commerce.
Businesses and investors are urged to stay informed on developments as governments navigate these complex trade disputes. Collaborative dialogue and negotiation remain critical in resolving tensions and fostering mutually beneficial relationships.
