China Open to EU Dialogue on Intellectual Property Amid WTO Dispute

Channels of communication between China and the European Union (EU) on intellectual property issues remain open, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced on Monday. The statement comes in response to the EU's recent complaint filed at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against China's judicial practices concerning standard essential patent disputes.

On January 20, China received a consultation request from the EU regarding the matter. In an online statement addressing media inquiries, the ministry emphasized China's commitment to adhering strictly to WTO rules and its accession commitments. The ministry highlighted that China has continuously improved its legislation and law enforcement related to the protection of intellectual property rights, achievements that have been widely recognized globally.

\"We will handle subsequent matters in accordance with WTO rules and firmly safeguard our legitimate rights and interests,\" the ministry asserted, reaffirming its stance on maintaining open dialogue with the EU.

The EU's complaint centers on concerns over China's judicial decisions involving standard essential patents, which are crucial for ensuring interoperability and compliance in various industries, including technology and telecommunications.

China's commitment to intellectual property protection has been a focal point in its trade relations, with ongoing efforts to enhance legal frameworks and enforcement mechanisms. The ministry's statement aims to reassure international partners of China's dedication to fostering a fair and open business environment.
