China Open to EU Dialogue on Intellectual Property Amid WTO Dispute

China has reaffirmed its willingness to engage in open communication with the European Union (EU) regarding intellectual property (IP) issues, following the EU's recent complaint filed with the World Trade Organization (WTO).

On Monday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that channels of communication with the EU on IP matters remain \"always open.\" This announcement comes in response to the EU's decision to lodge a complaint at the WTO against China's judicial measures concerning standard essential patent disputes.

In an online statement, the ministry confirmed receipt of a consultation request from the EU dated January 20. It emphasized China's commitment to adhering strictly to WTO regulations and fulfilling its accession commitments. The ministry highlighted China's continuous efforts to enhance legislation and law enforcement related to IP protection, noting that these achievements have been widely recognized internationally.

\"China will address subsequent matters in accordance with WTO rules and firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,\" the ministry added, underscoring its dedication to resolving the issue through established multilateral mechanisms.

The dispute centers on China's judicial practices related to standard essential patents, which are crucial for ensuring interoperability and standardization in various industries. The EU alleges that China's measures unduly restrict EU companies' ability to protect their patent rights.

This development reflects the complex dynamics of international trade relations and intellectual property rights, which are increasingly important in the global economy. Observers note that constructive dialogue between China and the EU will be essential in resolving the dispute and fostering mutual understanding.
