China has expressed its openness to ongoing communication with the European Union (EU) regarding intellectual property issues, according to a statement released by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce on Monday.
\"Channels of communication with the EU on intellectual property issues are always open,\" the ministry affirmed, responding to media inquiries.
The statement comes in the wake of the EU filing a complaint at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against China's judicial ruling on standard essential patent disputes. The complaint was filed on Monday, signaling escalating tensions over intellectual property rights between the two major trading partners.
The ministry noted that China received a consultation request from the EU on January 20, indicating that formal discussions are anticipated. China emphasized its commitment to adhering strictly to WTO rules and its accession commitments.
\"China has continually improved legislation and law enforcement related to the protection of intellectual property rights, and its achievements have been widely recognized,\" the ministry stated.
Furthermore, China pledged to address subsequent matters in accordance with WTO rules, asserting that it will \"firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.\"
The development underscores the importance of dialogue in resolving complex trade and intellectual property issues between China and the EU, both of which play significant roles in global economic affairs.
