China Open to EU Dialogue on Intellectual Property Amid WTO Complaint

China’s Ministry of Commerce announced on Monday that communication channels with the European Union on intellectual property (IP) issues remain open. This statement comes in response to the EU filing a complaint at the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding China’s judicial rulings on standard essential patent disputes.

“We have received the consultation request from the EU on January 20,” the ministry said in an online statement when responding to media inquiries about the issue. The ministry emphasized that China has strictly adhered to WTO rules and its accession commitments, continuously improving legislation and law enforcement related to intellectual property rights protection—a commitment that has been widely recognized.

The Ministry of Commerce added that China will handle subsequent matters in accordance with WTO rules and is committed to firmly safeguarding its legitimate rights and interests.
