Beijing, China — China affirmed on Monday that channels of communication with the European Union (EU) on intellectual property issues remain open. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce emphasized its willingness to engage in dialogue following the EU's recent complaint filed at the World Trade Organization (WTO) concerning China's judicial rulings on standard essential patent disputes.
The EU lodged the complaint on Monday, taking issue with how China's courts handle cases involving essential patents, which are crucial for global technology standards. In response, the Ministry of Commerce stated that it received the consultation request from the EU on January 20 and is prepared to address the concerns in accordance with WTO procedures.
The ministry highlighted China's commitment to WTO rules and its accession commitments. It stressed that China has continually improved its legislation and law enforcement related to the protection of intellectual property rights, achievements that have been widely recognized internationally.
\"China has adhered strictly to WTO rules and has made significant progress in enhancing intellectual property rights protection,\" the ministry said in an online statement. \"We will address subsequent matters in accordance with WTO rules and firmly safeguard our legitimate rights and interests.\"
The statement underscores China's stance on resolving trade disputes through dialogue and legal frameworks established by international organizations like the WTO. The ministry reiterated that cooperation and open communication are essential for addressing complex intellectual property issues that have global implications.
The ongoing discussions between China and the EU are expected to focus on balancing the protection of intellectual property with the promotion of innovation and fair competition in international markets.
