China Open to Communication with EU on Intellectual Property

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced on Monday that channels of communication with the European Union (EU) on intellectual property (IP) issues remain open. This statement follows the EU's filing of a complaint at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against China's judicial rulings on standard essential patent disputes.

According to an online statement released by the ministry, China received a consultation request from the EU on January 20 regarding the matter. The ministry emphasized that China has strictly adhered to WTO rules and its accession commitments. It highlighted the nation's continuous efforts to improve legislation and law enforcement related to the protection of intellectual property rights—a commitment that has been widely recognized internationally.

The Ministry of Commerce affirmed that China will address subsequent matters in accordance with WTO procedures and is determined to firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.
