China has affirmed its willingness to maintain open communication channels with the European Union (EU) regarding intellectual property (IP) rights issues. On Monday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that discussions with the EU on IP matters remain ongoing and open. The statement comes in response to the EU’s recent filing of a complaint at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against China concerning judicial rulings on standard essential patent (SEP) disputes. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce acknowledged receiving a consultation request from the EU on January 20, following the complaint. In an online statement addressing media inquiries, the ministry emphasized China’s steadfast adherence to WTO rules and its commitments made upon accession. It highlighted the nation’s continuous efforts to improve legislation and law enforcement related to the protection of intellectual property rights, noting that these achievements have been widely recognized internationally. “China will address subsequent matters in accordance with WTO rules and firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” the ministry stated, underscoring its commitment to fair and rules-based international trade practices.
