China's Ministry of Commerce announced on Monday that communication channels with the European Union (EU) regarding intellectual property issues remain open. The ministry emphasized its willingness to engage in dialogue amid recent tensions.
The statement came after the EU filed a complaint at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against China's judicial rulings on standard essential patent disputes. The EU alleges that China's courts are restricting EU companies from protecting their patents abroad.
According to the ministry, China received the EU's request for consultations on January 20 in response to media inquiries about the issue. The ministry reiterated that China has adhered strictly to WTO rules and its accession commitments.
The ministry highlighted that China has continually improved legislation and law enforcement related to the protection of intellectual property rights, and its achievements have been widely recognized. It added that the country will address subsequent matters in accordance with WTO rules and firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.
This development underscores the importance of open communication between China and the EU as they navigate complex issues surrounding intellectual property in the global market. Both parties are significant players in international trade, and their cooperation is vital for fostering innovation and fair competition.
