China Affirms Open Communication with EU Amid WTO Intellectual Property Dispute

China has reaffirmed its commitment to open dialogue with the European Union (EU) on intellectual property matters, following the EU's recent complaint at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over China's judicial practices regarding standard essential patent disputes.

On Monday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce issued an online statement acknowledging receipt of the EU's consultation request dated January 20. \"Channels of communication with the EU on intellectual property issues are always open,\" the ministry stated, responding to media inquiries about the situation.

The dispute arises from the EU's concerns over China's handling of standard essential patents, which are integral to technologies like mobile communications and can impact global industries and markets. The EU alleges that China's judicial rulings may unfairly disadvantage European patent holders.

Emphasizing China's commitment to international norms, the Ministry of Commerce highlighted that China has \"adhered strictly to WTO rules and its accession commitments.\" The ministry added, \"We have continually improved legislation and law enforcement related to the protection of intellectual property rights, and our achievements have been widely recognized.\"

China's reassurances suggest a willingness to engage constructively with the EU to resolve the dispute. The ministry affirmed that the country would address subsequent matters in accordance with WTO rules and is determined to \"firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.\"

This development underscores the importance of cooperation between China and the EU in upholding global trade standards and protecting intellectual property rights. As both economies play pivotal roles in international trade, their collaborative efforts are crucial for maintaining a stable and fair trading environment.
