The World Economic Forum (WEF) is gearing up for its 2024 Davos Forum with a strong emphasis on sustainability and diversity. In an exclusive interview with CGTN’s Global Business, Severin Podolak, Head of Event Management and Operations at the WEF, shared insights into the organization’s efforts to make the upcoming event more environmentally friendly and inclusive.
“Our goal is to ‘reduce, reuse, and recycle’ in every aspect of the forum,” Podolak explained. “We have implemented measures such as subsidizing participants who choose public transportation, encouraging a shift away from more carbon-intensive travel options.”
Podolak highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to minimize the environmental impact of the annual gathering, which attracts leaders from around the world. “Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for us; it’s a core value that influences our operational decisions,” he added.
Beyond environmental concerns, diversity is also at the forefront of the WEF’s agenda. “The 2024 Davos Forum will feature a more diverse representation in terms of regions, industries, and opinions,” Podolak noted. “We believe that bringing together a wide range of perspectives is crucial for addressing the complex challenges facing the global community.”
This commitment to diversity aims to foster more comprehensive dialogues on global issues, ensuring that voices from different sectors and parts of the world are heard. “Asia plays a significant role in global affairs, and we are keen to have strong participation from Asian leaders and innovators,” Podolak emphasized.
The WEF’s focus on sustainability and diversity reflects a growing recognition of the need for collaborative and inclusive approaches to problem-solving. As the world grapples with climate change, economic instability, and social inequalities, forums like Davos are looking to set an example in both practice and discourse.
“We are optimistic that these efforts will not only reduce our environmental footprint but also enrich the conversations and outcomes of the forum,” said Podolak. “By championing sustainability and embracing diversity, we hope to inspire others to do the same.”
