Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with U.S. business leaders in Washington D.C. on Sunday, expressing hope that American companies will continue to invest and establish roots in the Chinese mainland. He emphasized the important role they play in fostering steady and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.
Han, attending on behalf of President Xi Jinping, is in Washington D.C. to participate in the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Monday, at the invitation of the United States.
During the meeting with representatives from the U.S.-China Business Council and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Han highlighted the significant common interests shared by China and the United States, noting the vast potential for cooperation between the two nations.
“President Xi and President-elect Trump have reached important common understandings regarding the development of China-U.S. relations,” Han stated, referring to their recent phone conversation. “Getting the bilateral relationship off to a good start and keeping it growing steadily serves the common well-being of our peoples and meets the expectations of the international community.”
He commended the U.S. business community as the backbone of China-U.S. relations, acknowledging their role as participants, witnesses, contributors, and beneficiaries of bilateral economic and trade cooperation, as well as China’s reform and opening-up efforts.
“China will unswervingly advance its reform and opening-up and continue to improve its business environment,” Han assured. “We hope U.S. companies will seize the opportunity to share in the fruits of China’s development.”
Representatives from the U.S. business community expressed optimism about China’s economic prospects and development opportunities. They noted that the recent phone conversation between Trump and Xi sent a positive and encouraging message.
“As the world’s two most dynamic and technologically advanced economies, the United States and China should pursue mutually beneficial cooperation,” they said. “We support strengthening dialogue and communication to continue advancing bilateral relations and economic and trade cooperation.”
On the same day, Han also met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Han welcomed Tesla’s involvement in China’s market and encouraged deeper investment and cooperation.
Musk expressed enthusiasm for expanding Tesla’s presence in China, stating, “We are ready to deepen investment and cooperation with China and play an active role in promoting economic and trade exchanges between the United States and China.”
