Chinese Vice President Han Zheng expressed hope on Sunday that U.S. companies will continue to invest and establish deeper roots in China. During a meeting with representatives from the U.S. business community, including members of the U.S.-China Business Council and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Han emphasized the role of businesses as a bridge in fostering steady, sound, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.
Han is in Washington D.C. to attend the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Monday as President Xi Jinping's special representative at the invitation of the United States.
In discussions with U.S. business leaders, Han highlighted the recent phone conversation between President Xi and President-elect Trump, noting that they reached important common understandings regarding the development of China-U.S. relations. He stated that both nations share broad common interests and vast potential for cooperation.
"Getting the bilateral relationship off to a good start and keeping it growing steadily serves the common well-being of the peoples of the two countries and meets the expectations of the international community," Han remarked.
He acknowledged the U.S. business community as a backbone of China-U.S. relations, recognizing its participation, witness, contribution, and benefits in bilateral economic and trade cooperation, as well as in China's reform and opening-up efforts. Han reaffirmed China's commitment to advancing reform and opening-up and improving its business environment.
Representatives of the U.S. business community expressed optimism about China's economic prospects and development opportunities. They noted that the recent conversation between Trump and Xi sent a positive and encouraging message.
As the world's two most dynamic and technologically advanced economies, they stated that the United States and China should pursue mutually beneficial cooperation and work toward finding a constructive and stable way to coexist. The U.S. business leaders voiced support for strengthening dialogue and communication to continue advancing bilateral relations and economic and trade cooperation.
On Sunday, Han also met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Han welcomed U.S. companies, including Tesla, to seize opportunities to share in China's development and contribute to promoting China-U.S. economic and trade relations.
Musk expressed Tesla's readiness to deepen investment and cooperation in China and to play an active role in promoting economic and trade exchanges between the two countries.
