Chinese Vice President Han Zheng Meets U.S. Business Leaders to Strengthen Ties

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with representatives of the U.S. business community on Sunday, emphasizing China’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with the United States. Han is in Washington D.C. to attend the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Monday as President Xi Jinping’s special representative.

During the meeting, which included members from the U.S.-China Business Council and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Han expressed hope that American companies would continue to invest and establish deeper roots in China. “We hope U.S. companies will continue to invest and take root in China, play an active role as a bridge, and make a greater contribution to the steady, sound, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations,” he stated.

Han highlighted the recent phone conversation between President Xi and President-elect Trump, noting that they had reached important common understandings regarding the future development of bilateral relations. He underscored the broad common interests and vast potential for cooperation between the two nations, emphasizing that a strong start in their relationship would benefit both peoples and meet the expectations of the international community.

“The U.S. business community has always been the backbone of China-U.S. relations,” Han remarked, calling them participants, witnesses, contributors, and beneficiaries of bilateral economic and trade cooperation as well as China’s reform and opening-up efforts. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to advancing reform and opening-up and to continuously improving its business environment.

Representatives of the U.S. business community welcomed the positive signals from the recent dialogue between the Chinese and U.S. leaders. They expressed optimism about China’s economic prospects and the opportunities for development it presents. As the world’s two most dynamic and technologically advanced economies, they emphasized the importance of pursuing mutually beneficial cooperation and finding a constructive and stable way to coexist. The business leaders voiced support for strengthening dialogue and communication to advance bilateral relations and economic and trade cooperation.

On the same day, Han also met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Han welcomed Tesla’s ongoing investment in China and encouraged U.S. companies to seize opportunities in China’s development. “China welcomes U.S. companies, including Tesla, to share in the fruits of China’s development and make greater contributions to promoting China-U.S. economic and trade relations,” he said.

Musk expressed Tesla’s readiness to deepen its investment and cooperation with China and his desire to play an active role in promoting economic and trade exchanges between the two countries.
