Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with representatives of the U.S. business community in Washington D.C. on Sunday, aiming to strengthen China-U.S. ties and promote economic cooperation between the two nations. Han is in Washington D.C. to attend the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Monday as Chinese President Xi Jinping's special representative at the invitation of the United States.
During the meeting, Han expressed hope that U.S. companies would continue to invest and establish their presence in China, playing an active role as a bridge and contributing to the steady, sound, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations. The discussion included members from the U.S.-China Business Council and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Han highlighted that President Xi and President-elect Trump recently held a phone conversation, during which they reached important common understandings regarding the development of China-U.S. relations. He emphasized that China and the United States share broad common interests and vast potential for cooperation. Getting the bilateral relationship off to a good start and maintaining its steady growth, Han noted, serves the common well-being of the peoples of both countries and meets the expectations of the international community.
He acknowledged the U.S. business community as the backbone of China-U.S. relations, acting as participants, witnesses, contributors, and beneficiaries of bilateral economic and trade cooperation as well as China's reform and opening-up efforts. Han reiterated China's commitment to advancing reform and opening-up and to continually improving its business environment.
Representatives of the U.S. business community conveyed optimism about China's economic prospects and development opportunities. They expressed support for strengthening dialogue and communication between the two countries to advance bilateral relations and economic and trade cooperation. They also noted that the recent phone conversation between President-elect Trump and President Xi sent a positive and encouraging message. As the world's two most dynamic and technologically advanced economies, they said, the United States and China should pursue mutually beneficial cooperation and work toward finding a constructive and stable way to coexist.
In addition to meeting with business representatives, Han also met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Sunday. Han welcomed U.S. companies, including Tesla, to seize the opportunity to share in the fruits of China's development and to contribute to promoting China-U.S. economic and trade relations.
Musk expressed that Tesla is ready to deepen its investment and cooperation with China and to play an active role in fostering economic and trade exchanges between the United States and China.
