The construction of a new marina in Port City Colombo is set to position Sri Lanka as a burgeoning hub for regional tourism and investment, according to Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, Herath emphasized the marina’s potential to attract foreign investment and elevate Sri Lanka’s international profile.
“Port City Colombo is a crucial platform for us to draw in foreign capital and enhance our global image,” Herath stated. “The development of this marina will fill a significant gap in high-end maritime services in South Asia and attract more high-net-worth tourists.”
Herath highlighted that the initiative would foster cultural and economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and China, aiding in achieving the nation’s tourism revenue goals. “The construction of the port city not only strengthens our ties with China but also contributes substantially to our economic growth,” he added.
Harsha Amarasekera, chairman of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, echoed these sentiments, noting that the port city continues to inject new momentum into Sri Lanka’s economy. “The commencement of this new project will not only create more employment opportunities but will also attract international high-end brands to establish a presence here, boosting our economic recovery,” Amarasekera said.
The marina commercial project spans approximately 20,400 square meters, with a construction area of about 49,000 square meters. It is poised to become a landmark development, enhancing the region’s appeal to tourists and investors alike.
