Colombo, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka is poised to become a new hotspot for regional tourism and investment with the construction of a state-of-the-art marina in Port City Colombo. Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath announced at a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday that the marina project will serve as a significant platform for attracting foreign investment and enhancing the nation’s international image.
“The development of the marina fills a critical gap in high-end maritime services in South Asia,” Herath said. “It will attract more high-net-worth tourists, promoting Sri Lanka as a premier destination in the region.”
The marina is expected to foster cultural and economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and China, contributing to Sri Lanka’s tourism revenue goals. “This project symbolizes the deepening ties between our two countries,” Herath added. “It will not only boost tourism but also create opportunities for bilateral collaboration.”
Harsha Amarasekera, chairman of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, highlighted the project’s potential to invigorate the Sri Lankan economy. “The port city will continue to inject new impetus into our economy,” he stated. “The commencement of this new project will create more employment opportunities and attract international high-end brands, aiding in our economic recovery.”
Covering an area of approximately 20,400 square meters with a construction area of about 49,000 square meters, the marina commercial project is set to position Sri Lanka as a key player in the region’s maritime industry.
The Port City Colombo, developed in collaboration with China, represents a significant investment in Sri Lanka’s future. Officials believe that the marina will enhance the nation’s appeal to tourists and investors alike, solidifying its role as a dynamic hub in South Asia.
