The construction of a new marina in Port City Colombo is set to transform Sri Lanka into a premier destination for regional tourism and investment, according to Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, Herath emphasized the marina’s potential to elevate Sri Lanka’s international profile. “Port City Colombo is an important platform for Sri Lanka to attract foreign investment and enhance its international image,” he said. “The development of the marina will fill the gap in high-end maritime services in South Asia and attract more high-net-worth tourists.”
Herath highlighted that the construction of the port city will bolster cultural and economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and China, aiding Sri Lanka in achieving its tourism revenue targets.
Harsha Amarasekera, chairman of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, expressed optimism about the project’s economic impact. “The port city will continue to inject new impetus into Sri Lanka’s economy,” he noted. “The commencement of the new project will not only create more employment opportunities but will also more effectively attract international high-end brands to settle in, boosting Sri Lanka’s economic recovery.”
Covering approximately 20,400 square meters with a construction area of about 49,000 square meters, the marina commercial project is poised to offer state-of-the-art facilities for luxury yachts and maritime services.
The development of the marina is expected to position Sri Lanka as a key hub in South Asia for luxury tourism and investment, enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth in the region.
