China’s Railway Trips Expected to Hit 11.5 Million on New Year’s Day 2025

China’s railway network is set to experience a significant surge in passenger traffic on New Year’s Day 2025, with an estimated 11.5 million trips expected, according to the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd.

To accommodate the influx of travelers, the railway sector has added 342 additional trains on busy routes, increasing the total number of trains operating on Wednesday to 10,427. Authorities have reinforced safety measures and enhanced services to ensure a safe and efficient travel experience for passengers embarking on their journeys at the start of the new year.

This uptick in travel marks the beginning of preparations for the upcoming Spring Festival travel rush, known as chunyun. Train tickets for the travel rush went on sale Tuesday, signaling the onset of one of the busiest travel seasons in China.

The Spring Festival, China’s most significant traditional holiday, will fall on January 29 this year. The chunyun period, recognized for its high transportation demand as millions return home for family reunions, is scheduled to run from January 14 to February 22.

With the anticipation of increased passenger numbers, China’s railway authorities are taking proactive steps to ensure travelers have a smooth journey. The addition of trains and improvements in services reflect the commitment to meeting the needs of passengers during this peak season.

Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead and book their tickets early to secure their preferred travel times during this busy period.
