China’s film industry has once again demonstrated remarkable growth, with the country’s box office revenue surpassing 42.5 billion yuan (approximately $5.91 billion) in 2024, according to the China Film Administration’s announcement on Wednesday.
Domestic productions played a significant role in this achievement, contributing over 33.4 billion yuan and accounting for 78.68 percent of the total revenue. The latest data reveals that 79 movies grossed more than 100 million yuan each, with 55 of these being homegrown films.
The nation’s cinematic infrastructure also expanded, adding more than 4,600 new cinema screens in cities throughout 2024. This growth brings the total number of screens across the country to an impressive 90,968, enhancing access to cinematic experiences for audiences nationwide.
Urban cinemas saw a surge in attendance, recording over 1 billion moviegoer visits last year. This uptick reflects the strong enthusiasm for film and the cultural importance of cinema in China.
The robust performance of the film industry underscores China’s dynamic entertainment market and its influential role in the global cinematic landscape. Industry observers anticipate continued growth, driven by investment in domestic content and the expansion of cinema facilities.
