China’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are making significant strides in patent innovation, spurred by the increasing industrialization of patents across the nation. This surge is accelerating their growth and contributing to the country’s technological advancement, according to the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA).
At a press conference on Monday, CNIPA spokesperson Liang Xinxin revealed that as of November, enterprises account for 73.5 percent of valid domestic invention patents. A substantial portion of these patents is held by SMEs, underscoring their active role in driving innovation.
In 2024, the proportion of valid invention patents held by SMEs related to independently developed inventions reached 75.3 percent, marking a 3.9 percentage point increase from last year. Moreover, the industrialization rate of these patents has risen to 55.1 percent, up by 3.6 percentage points compared to the previous year, Liang reported.
Senior CNIPA official Wang Peizhang emphasized the administration’s efforts to foster collaborative innovation. By working closely with central government departments and local authorities, CNIPA is promoting partnerships between SMEs, universities, and research institutions. This collaborative approach aims to accelerate SME growth through patent commercialization and technological integration.
These developments highlight China’s commitment to nurturing innovation among its SMEs, positioning them as vital contributors to the nation’s economic and technological future.
