Macao: China’s Gateway to Portuguese-speaking Countries on 25th Anniversary

As the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) celebrates the 25th anniversary of its return to China, the city is charting a new course toward economic diversification and international collaboration. Known for its rich cultural heritage and as a former Portuguese colony, Macao is uniquely positioned to serve as a bridge between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

In a recent interview with CGTN, Jose Maria Pereira Coutinho, a member of the Macao Legislative Assembly, emphasized the SAR’s pivotal role in fostering connections. “Macao has the unique advantage of understanding both Chinese and Portuguese cultures. This positions us perfectly to facilitate access for Chinese businesses to Portuguese-speaking markets and the European Union,” he said.

The SAR’s government is leveraging this advantage to attract investment and promote trade. By strengthening ties with countries like Portugal, Brazil, Angola, and Mozambique, Macao aims to become a hub for business and cultural exchange. This strategy not only benefits Chinese enterprises seeking new opportunities but also opens doors for international businesses looking to enter the Chinese market.

Coutinho highlighted initiatives to enhance collaboration, including hosting forums and exhibitions that bring together entrepreneurs and officials from China and Portuguese-speaking nations. “We are committed to creating a platform where ideas and opportunities can flourish,” he remarked.

The 25th anniversary marks a significant milestone for Macao, reflecting on its growth under the “one country, two systems” principle. As it looks to the future, the SAR is focused on expanding its role on the global stage, leveraging its unique position to contribute to China’s Belt and Road Initiative and the Greater Bay Area development plan.

“Our goal is to diversify the economy and provide new pathways for cooperation,” Coutinho concluded. “Macao will continue to be a dynamic link connecting China with the Portuguese-speaking world.”
