From Student to Startup: Afghan Entrepreneur Thrives in Beijing’s Ecosystem

For Afghan entrepreneur Abdul Wahed Ahmadzai, each day in Beijing brings a new sense of fulfillment as he bridges global talents with entrepreneurial opportunities in China’s dynamic capital.

Ahmadzai has called Beijing’s Chaoyang District home for a decade. His journey began in 2014 when he arrived as a finance student at the University of International Business and Economics. Over the years, he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, envisioning a future as a white-collar professional in investment banking.

The turning point came in 2016 when, recommended by his tutor, he joined a student startup team and pitched the idea of a service platform for international students at a startup competition. “Surprisingly, I won,” Ahmadzai recalled. “I thought I was just going there to present my idea and hopefully get some feedback. But then I realized that in Beijing, there are so many platforms, so many ecosystems, so many initiatives targeted to help young entrepreneurs and international talents build their businesses without worrying about where to start.”

Embracing the opportunities, Ahmadzai dived into Beijing’s vibrant startup scene. “I think Beijing is home to one of the best ecosystems,” he said. “I always tell people that the only thing you need to start a business here is an idea.”

Today, as a serial entrepreneur, Ahmadzai continues to foster connections between global talents and the wealth of opportunities in Beijing. His story highlights how the city’s supportive environment enables foreigners to transform ideas into thriving businesses.
